Walking – The most popular pursuit for Irish tourists

A recent paper by Teagasc has revealed that walking is by far the biggest of the special interest activities of tourists to Ireland, with 280,000 partaking in 2005. Golfing trips was the next most popular activity with 98,000 visitors coming to Ireland to play reports Galway Tourism.

The national rural development conference held in Galway recently also revealed that these figures were even larger in 2006, with an estimated 335,000 visitors enjoying walking, 20% up on the previous year.

Total revenue for the Irish tourism industry by overseas visitors engaging in walking and hiking activities in 2005 was estimated at €174 million.
